Sea Jack crane accident in IJmuiden harbour

Haarlem, 16 August 2007

On Sunday, 29 July, an accident took place in IJmuiden harbour when a boom fell off a crane. One man was slightly injured while trying to dodge the falling steel. No other injuries were reported. Apart from the damage to the crane, various parts of wind turbines and a lighting construction were damaged.

Cause as yet unknown
The crane in question was a 60-metre high crane of the Sea Jack (formerly known as the Jumping Jack), the mobile working platform that was previously used to install the foundations for the offshore Princess Amalia Wind Farm. Since the date of the accident, various parties have conducted investigations into the accident. The results of these investigations have not yet been published. Meanwhile, the crane wreck has been removed from the wharf.

Sea Jack was not yet deployed for the Princess Amalia Wind Farm project
At the time of the incident, the Sea Jack was stationed at the wharf, at the same location where the components of the wind turbines were stored. However, the vessel had not yet been hired for the Princess Amalia Wind Farm project. The Sea Jack and crane were scheduled to be deployed for the installation of the wind turbines at the wind farm. In the meantime, the Sea Energy vessel will still be used for the project. As a result of the accident, the Princess Amalia Wind Farm project has been delayed for a few days so far.
